Ecological Indicators Workshop

Workshop Discussion Groups (Working Groups)

1. Water Quality and Sediment Quality
2. Living Resources
3. Watersheds and Landscapes

Descriptions of Working Groups:

Water Quality and Sediment Quality - Physical, chemical, and biological parameters that define the condition of the water, throughout the water column, and the underlying sediments in estuarine environments. Examples of such parameters are:

a) Dissolved oxygen levels
b) Temperature
c) Salinity
d) Density
e) Chlorophyll a
f) Nutrients
g) Pathogens (E. coli/fecal coliforms)
h) Toxics
i) Algal mats or harmful algal blooms
j) Meterological events (rain, etc.)
k) Atmospheric deposition

Living Resources Working Group -- Populations, communities, and individuals of biota and their habitats that reside in estuarine environments. Some examples for Narragansett Bay or the coastal ponds are:

a.) Finfish diversity
b.) Eelgrass adundance
c.) Seal density
d.) Commercial fishery landings
e.) Recreational fishery landings
f.) Birds counts
g.) Exotic and invasive species
h.) Spartina extent
i.) Phragmites extent
j.) Shellfsh beds density and extent
k.) Animal pathology

Watersheds and Landscapes Working Group --- The physical, biological, and anthropogenic factors that effect the environmental quality of watersheds of estuarine environments. Some examples are:

a.) Land cover change
b.) Point source loadings
c.) Septic system density
d.) Year-round human population
e.) Stream flow
f.) Diversity of neotropical migrants
g.) Sedimentation and erosion
h.) Stream dam density and other water diversions
i.) Extent of impervious, armored and modified surfaces.
j.) Atmospheric deposition to the watershed
k.) Groundwater - quality & extraction rate
l.) Watershed invasive species

There are 4 issues that need to be addressed by each group:

1.) What are the indicator measurements needed to describe the condition of the system or resource?
2.) What are the indicator measurement needed to identify stressors of the system or resource? (Stressor - the known or suspected cause of an undesirable effect (NAS 2000))
3.) What is the best visualization format for each measure?
4.) Are the needed indicator measurements being taken presently?
