Procedure: The merged fathometer and RTK data were split into two groups. 90% of the points were randomly selected from the full dataset and the remaining 10% were set aside as a validation dataset. A new TIN was created from the 90% random subset of points and from the TIN a new grid was built. A grid was created from the validation points and the true depth at each one of these validation locations was subtracted from the predicted depth in the grid created from the 90% subset of points. The difference between the validation dataset and the 90% subset grid is our estimate of the accuracy of the Quonny pond elevation dataset. The average difference between measured depth and our bathymetric grid was 0.4ft. 78% of all the depths were within 6 inches of true depth.

Data from multple sources was used to create grid. RIDOT, NOAA Lidar, RTK elevations, and bathymetry collected by Joe Klinger were all used to create an ESRI TIN of the data.
Details on Bathymetry Data:
Joe Klinger collected 54,514 soundings. Depth was measured by a survey-grade (3in) fathometer (in feet) registered to NAVD88. Tide correction was done using Hypack 2.12A Gold software. Tide corrections were based on Hypack analysis of three tide gauges placed in Quonny by NRCS for the survey. Transducer correction is based on the depth of transducer below the hull plus an assumed squat of the boat of one inch. XY locations were obtained with a Trimble DSM212L DGPS receiver with sub-meter accuracy.
Data were provided in RI State Plane feet NAD83 to URI EDC excel spreadsheet. URI-EDC eliminated duplicate and aberrant soundings as well as data point with aberrant XY locations. Excel coordinates were converted to an Arc shapefile with ArcView 3.3 and converted to a coverage with Arc 9.2. Futher field checks also eliminated a handfull of incorrect points. Shallow water depths were also measured with a RTK GPS. All data are included in the raw data file below.
A TIN was created using the 54,111 bathymetric soundings and a hard breakline (depth = 0) consisting of the wetline from the 1997 RIGIS orthophotos. The TIN was converted to a GRID (30 foot pixel size). Land from the 1997 wetline RIGIS dataset was used as a mask to set all land-based pixels to NODATA.
The bathymetric GRID was smoothed by applying a 3 pixel radius averaging filter and 1 foot contours created from the smoothed bathymetric GRID. The smoothed contours are shown and can be downloaded.
VALIDATION PROCESS: The processing was repeated as described above using points from the original bathymetric dataset that were randomly selected and used to rebuild the TIN/GRID model as described above. The remaining points were used to compare the recorded value for depth at each location with the modeled depth value.
