Abstract:
Side scan sonar records were interpreted to differentiate between bottom types in Ninigret Pond, a shallow coastal lagoon in Charlestown, Rhode Island. Polygons indicating similar acoustic signal were drawn over the side scan sonar mosaic at 1:2,400. Each type of acoustic signal was described and assigned a code. Using grain-size data from URI and the NRCS, bottom types for the polygons were named according to the Dethier habitat classification scheme. Polygons were ground-truthed with an underwater video camera. Using the video data, eelgrass locations and presence of decaying organic matter were added to the polygon dataset. Anthropogenic influences that were visible in the side scan data were also added to the dataset.
Purpose:
To characterize bottom types and vegetation cover in Ninigret Pond as a step to creating a subaqueous soil and habitat map.
