RIFISH-L Discussion List

The purpose of RIFISH-L is to provide a forum for communication and vigorous discussion on issues relevant to marine fisheries management in RI. There are few resource management issues as complex as those in marine fisheries, and there are no simple solutions to the challenges before us. Discussion among the different players in the issue is essential if we are to identify the full range of management options before us, and the expected positive and negative repercussions of exercising those options.

If you are not familiar with LISTSERV technology, the following might be useful. When you send an email message (a posting) to RIFISH-L, it is forwarded to all the people subscribed to the list. The computer software that performs this is called a LISTSERV. The LISTSERV recognizes you by your email address. RIFISH-L is configured such that only subscribed members can post a message. If you send a posting to the list from an email account other than the one you are subscribed with, the LISTSERV will reject your posting. Also, if your email address changes, you must unsubscribe with the old address and resubscribe with the new one.

The list is maintained at the University of Rhode Island Coastal Institute. There is no screening or moderation of RIFISH-L postings. The list is configured so that when you hit the reply button to respond to a posting, your message goes to the all the subscribers of the discussion list. Think twice before hitting the "send" key, a lot of people will be reading your response. RIFISH-L is not to be used to advertise services or products. Vigorous discussion and disagreement frequently spawn our most creative ideas. We encourage debate but it must be done in a polite, civil, and respectful manner. Personal attacks will not be tolerated and anyone engaging in impolite dialogue will be dropped from the list.

Here are a few technical pointers on using the RIFISH-L list: ·

Send all messages (postings) to RIFISH-L@PETE.URI.EDU. Your message will be automagically forwarded to everyone who has subscribed to the list. · NEVER include attachments to your postings. They can cause annoying problems with many subscribers' email service.
