Nathan Vinhateiro
Geological Oceanography
vita
Nathan is a Rhode Island native who first discovered an interest in marine science as an undergraduate at URI when he was invited to participate in an oceanographic cruise to the South Pacific. His enthusiasm was further cultivated after living in Honolulu, where his work as geologist took him throughout the Pacific on a diverse collection of coastal environmental projects. Now as a doctoral candidate at URI’s Graduate School of Oceanography, Nathan works with Professors John King and Rebecca Robinson, studying records of past climate, sea level, and environmental history from coastal sediment archives.
Recognizing that his strengths were not exclusively behind a laboratory bench, Nathan has made interdisciplinary, cooperative, and collaborative research experiences a priority of his graduate career.Concurrent with his academic research, Nathan has participated in several coastal management projects as a research assistant with URI’s Coastal Resources Center (CRC). Here his work has focused primarily on hazard mitigation and resilience of coastal communities, at both global and local levels. Recently, Nathan worked with colleagues at CRC to draft a statewide policy that addresses the impacts of sea level rise during the 21st century for the RI Coastal Resources Management Council (CRMC).
When not in, on, or around the water, Nathan spends his spare time rock climbing, biking, running, and traveling with his wife and daughters. Feel free to contact him at nate@gso.uri.edu.
