Coastal Institute IGERT Project

Grants-in-Aid Program

November 2007

Eligibility:  All alumni of the CIIP who have published the results of their Internship are eligible to apply for a Grant-in-Aid.  The publication can take many different forms and formats as long as it has been externally reviewed, has a broad distribution, and reaches a scientific or citizen audience. Examples of appropriate venues for the publication can be a peer reviewed journal, a popular publication, or an agency technical bulletin.

Purpose:  The Grant-in-Aid should support your research, dissertation development, and professional growth.  Expenses that are typically covered by CIIP Grants-in-Aid include, costs associated with attending professional meetings, supplies, and travel to field sites or research laboratories.  It is desirable, but not mandatory, that students give paper or poster presentations at the conferences they are seeking support to attend.  Grants-in-Aid may not be used for supplemental pay for the recipient, but they may be used to purchase student help (e.g., undergraduate Coastal Fellows) with a project.  Typically, Grants-in-Aid are under $3,000 each.   We anticipate funding approximately $10,000 of Grants-in-Aid each year. A URI grants cover sheet does not have to be provided.

Instructions:  Proposal should be no more than 4 pages long and include the following sections

Proposed Activities. In a single paragraph succinctly describe the activities for which you seek funding.

Background. Describe the research issue you are working on and how the activities for which you seek funding will contribute to advancing this research.

Relevance.  How does the research project you are working on further our knowledge of multidisciplinary problem-solving in coastal ecosystems?

Budget.  Provide a detailed budget and a justification for each budget item. Do not include overhead charges to your budget.  CIIP Grants-in-Aid are administered by URI and use of these funds must adhere to URI purchasing and personnel procedures. Please make every effort to stretch your grant dollar. For example, we encourage you to share rooms at conferences anduse public transportation if and when possible.

Letter of Support.  Your application must include a letter of support from your major professor.

Submission:  Send your application and letter of support in a single pdf file to Dr. Q. Kellogg (q@edc.uri.edu).  Your proposal will be reviewed by the CIIP Council and second-year CIIP trainees. Applications may be made at any time. Customarily, we do not provide multiple Grants-in-Aid to any one individual in a given year, however, exemptions may be made under certain circumstances.

Acknowledgement: Please acknowledge the CIIP in any papers, posters, or presentations that result from work performed with financial, technical, or instructional support from the CIIP. The acknowledgement should be: "This project was supported in part by NSF IGERT grant DGE-0504103 to the University of Rhode Island Coastal Institute."
