Admission Process for CIIP Trainees

For prospective CIIP Trainees beginning September 2008,
application materials should be submitted electronically (MS Word or pdf format) to

Applications received after 1 March
will be considered until the 2008 Traineeships have been awarded.

Applications will be reviewed by the CIIP Council. Finalists may be asked to interview with the CIIP Council.

A CIIP Traineeship carries an annual stipend of $30,000 and lasts two years. Applicants are typically in their first year or two of their Ph.D. program and must be thoroughly familiar with the CIIP vision and curriculum.

The CIIP does not support M.S. students. All applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States. CIIP Trainees will be chosen by the CIIP Council.

Major professors of CIIP applicants must be thoroughly familiar with the CIIP curriculum and approve of their student's participation in all components of the program.

Criteria for Evaluation

1. Ability to write clearly and succinctly
2. Commitment to the goals and values of the CIIP
3. Commitment from the major professor to contributing to the CIIP program
4 .Contributes to gender and cultural diversity of the CIIP program
5. Willingness to participate in CIIP activities after completing the 2-year Traineeship
6. Research interest in issues relevant to coastal ecosystem science, policy, and/or governance in Rhode Island or the northeastern U.S. See our proposal for a description of the research questions we address.

3. Statement (4 pages maximum length) describing:

  • Your Ph.D. program emphasis and research goals
  • Why you find the CIIP appealing
  • What you hope to achieve from the CIIP experience
  • What you can contribute to the CIIP
  • How you might engage in CIIP activities after you complete your Traineeship


4. Letter of support from major professor describing student qualifications and willingness of the major advisor to:

  • Attend September orientation
  • Lead a module in the summer science practicum
  • Attend CIIP-wide meetings
  • Contribute to the CIIP internal review process
  • Plans for supporting the student after the 2-year IGERT Traineeship
